This set has the widest margins of any Audubon set or plate that we have ever been fortunate enough to have handled. The plates and text pages measure app. 10 5/8" X 6 7/8". The set is bound into a green half green morocco leather binding over marbled paper on the front and back covers. The spine has raised bands in six compartments, lettered in gilt in the second and fourth; the others paneled in gilt.

With marbleized end papers; the top edge in gilt. One would be hard pressed to find a hint of foxing or text offsetting anywhere in the 8 volumes. This is a phenomenal set.

We are pleased to offer this beautiful complete 8 volume set of J. Audubon's The Birds Of America. Audubon was born in Haiti and upon his arrival in America, he began his ascendancy into recording natural history in North America. He completed this massive work, covering 500 hand colored plates all set in their natural surroundings, in just over four years.

Upon purchasing the one hundred sets of five plates, the subscriber then had the plates bound into a binding of his or her choosing. Only 1200 seven volume sets were published in the first edition. This is a later set published by George Lockwood between 1870-71. The text pages as well as the plates have the widest margins we have ever seen.

All 500 plates are naturally present: none have been removed. The plates are all in fabulous condition. Gum arabic was added to the birds features to accentuate their features. The paper is supple with no brittleness whatsoever. It is our hope that this set will stay in good hands and escape the cutting board as this is truly a set that deserves to remain intact, the obvious financial temptation notwithstanding.
