We bought a number of his lithographs, some directly from him, others where we found them, during the 1980s to the early 2000s. We did not consider them'Indian Art' so much as pieces by a brilliant artist. The fact that we collected traditional Native American things was a bonus, but not really important. Neta, who had a marvelous eye, chose the framing of all of them. We used high quality framers, but she had to fight the recommendations of some of them who thought the frames ought to be made of birch bark or buffalos, because, you know. An interesting fact, otherwise meaningless, R.

S father was Carl Gorman, an artist himself and one of the famous and heroic Navajo Code Talkers of WWII fame. This one, titled "Parasol" depicts a two Navajo woman or girls holding a parasol to protect themselves from the blistering New Mexico sun. This is a departure from most of his works which feature a single person.

This appealed to us because of the composition and the story one gets from it, and how it captures the vast spaciousness of the high desert. Multicolor Stone lithographs are produced by the artist with a lot of work and in many steps, based on the principle that oil and water don't mix.

Each color requires a separate run of the paper on the lithographic press, and a retreatment of the lithographic stone. This is a large picture.

The image is 34 x 26" and the framed picture about 42x38" Signed and numbered limited edition - #179 of an edition of 200. A good guide for current value of the highly collectible works of RC Gorman, go to the website of Western Graphics Workshop.
