His work has been featured in magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. His career highpoint came when he was chosen by Diana, Princess of Wales, for her Vanity Fair photoshoot in 1997. Testino has been regularly employed by the British royal family ever since.

Aaron Hicklin of The Observer described him as " the world's most prolific magazine and fashion trade photographer ". His persistence in shooting Gisele Bündchen is widely credited with elevating her to supermodel status. In 2002, The National Portrait Gallery in London staged the landmark exhibition " Portraits " by Mario Testino that to date remains its second most successful exhibit. For ten years it had the highest attendance of any exhibition ever to be held there.

Over the next four years the exhibition went on tour to Milan, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Tokyo, Mexico City, and Boston. Mario Testino; Undressed' was recently on view at the Helmut Newton Foundation, Berlin, Germany (2017). Conceived exclusively for the Foundation, Undressed blurs the boundaries between fashion, eroticism and art. It also subverts conventions and explores different modes of undressing.

Undressed delves deep into Testinos archive, offering a metaphorical undressing of the man as well as his working practice. 54 larger-than-life images are affixed directly to the walls in three of the Foundations exhibition halls, reaching into the corners of the room and up to the ceiling, filling the rooms with bodies and emotions to create an imposing human landscape. In addition,' Mario Testino: No Limits' was recently on view at the Kunstforeningen GL STRAND, Copenhagen, Denmark (2016). Also,' Mario Testino: In Your Face' was recently at the Kulturforum, Berlin, Germany (2015).

This exhibit presented the full range of Testino's photographic work, in 125 images, placing particular emphasis on its provocative contrasts. This was the first time' In Your Face' had been exhibited in Europe following its premiere in 2012 at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA.

It has also been shown at the Museo de Arte Latinoamericana de Buenos Aires (MALBA) and at the Museu de Arte Brasileira (FAAP) in São Paolo in 2014. The exhibition explores and celebrates the innovation and diversity in Testino's photography, which evokes elegance, irreverence and contradiction.

Testino was involved with the selection and layout of the works, juxtaposing formal portraits with private snapshots, nudes with fashion, and black and white with color.
