It has been part of the London metropolitan area since the 19th century. The town is a river crossing point, with the Woolwich Ferry and the Woolwich foot tunnel crossing to North Woolwich in the London Docklands. Throughout the 17th, 18th, 19th and most of the 20th century, Woolwich was an important naval, military and industrial town. A very fine large original antique hand coloured aquatint illustrating a view of Woolwich.
This fine aquatint was drawn by Joseph Farington. A and here engraved by Joseph Constantine Stadler. Generally very good condition, some age tone, with beautiful original hand colouring. First published on folio sheet: 16½ x 12¼ (420mm x 310mm).
Boarder trimmed to approx 15.5" X 11.5" and previously mounted with residue mounting tape to edges verso. One of the grandest and most important books on the Thames.
Although not the first coloured. Aquatint book, [it] was the first major one, and it was to set an example for the type of illustration.
