1928 EDWARD BAWDEN Storm at Sea Hand-Coloured Pochoir Illustration c. 5x5ins
Edward Bawden hand-coloured stencil illustration (Pochoir), from his first book commission, drawn while still in his twenties. The Life and Adventures of Peter Wilkins by Robert Paltock. The story is a cross between Robinson Crusoe and Gulliver's Travels with a country of flying people.
This is NOT a later reproduction but comes from the 1928 edition and is a stencil illustration by the pochoir method (in which colour is added straight to the paper by hand). This accounts for the sophistication and breadth of tone in the rich colouring.
